A gene responsible for chronic pain has been identified, which could lead to drugs for treating long-lasting back pain, arthritis and headaches.

Scientists say they may have found a gene that regulates chronic pain, a discovery that could help researchers develop more effective and targeted painkiller drugs.

Gene that controls chronic pain identified
A gene responsible for regulating chronic pain, called HCN2, has been identified. Chronic pain comes in two main varieties. The first, inflammatory pain, occurs when a persistent injury (e.g. a burn or arthritis) results in an enhanced sensitivity of pain-sensitive nerve endings, thus increasing the sensation of pain.
