Should I exercise or not exercise the most painful area?

Answered By Eric Falwelle, Editor

Although exercise is one of the best things for fibromyalgia, exercising the most painful area should be avoided. Patients must be careful not to overdo physical activity because this may trigger relapse.

Patients with fibromyalgia should do exercises that are gentle, low-impact such as walking and bicycling. Patient should start their exercise program slowly. Some muscle soreness is normal when starting to exercise, but sharp pain may be a sign of overworked muscles.
